How To Use Home Decorating Fabrics

Add a touch of warmth & coziness to your home with these easy tips.

Home decorating fabrics are meant to compliment a room. Incorporating beautiful fabrics into your design will certainly elevate the décor so consider home decorating fabrics for your upholstery, couch covers, slip-covers, bed coverings, window treatments, table coverings, wall décor etc. A room without home decorating fabric can be rather plain and give out a cold feeling and by incorporating home decorating fabrics, you can transform a space into an inviting, warm and cozy place to relax and enjoy with family and guests. Just look how the additon of rugs, throw pillows and blankets have transformed this patio into an incredibly inviting and cozy space.

Find your design vision

You can make a truly stunning and bold statement with home decorating fabrics but it’s important that you choose your fabrics and patterns very carefully, and ensure they don’t clash with the other objects in the room like furniture, accent pieces etc. It’s not 1995 anymore so you don’t have to go all matchy-matchy; on the contrary, designers today encourage us to take risks with our choices and create new and inspiring mixes. But you still want to tackle your home re-design like a project so first consider your overall creative vision, filter through your existing décor and decide what you want to keep and what you want to discard or upgrade by simply changing the fabric like in the case of chairs, sofas, and even lampshades. So remember to first set a clear direction in order to avoid frustration throughout the process and end up with a home that looks like a zoo. Here are some of our favorite bold mixes:

Pick your fabrics

So now that you have a vision and clear direction you’ll want to think about your colors and textures, and start sourcing your home decorating fabrics. For example, let’s say your vision is a Tuscan style, the home decorating fabric choices would include woven textures such as burlap, fabrics made from the abaca fiber and fabrics made from the banana tree fibers, savannah cloth and tobacco cloth. Tuscan home decorating fabrics tend to be heavier but they are very flexible and versatile so you could incorporate these home decorating fabrics in your window coverings, slip-covers and area rugs.

And let’s say you’re more into a cottage style, your home decorating fabrics choices would include floral patterns and bright colors. Cottage decorating, with regards to upholstery and the various projects requiring fabric, suggests bold and colorful patterns. Although a floral pattern is the most popular in home decorating fabrics for the cottage theme, printed fabrics with vegetables or fruit are also quite often used.

Are you more of a romantic soul and crushing on a Victorian theme perhaps? Then consider home decorating fabrics such as velvet or brocade in rich colors of blue, green, burgundy or gold. Victorian home decorating fabrics tend to be quite feminine as well as elaborate and are perfect for curtains, bed covers, sofa slip-covers or wall decor. You might even want to trim these home decorating fabrics with lace, beads or ribbons for an extra touch of romance.

So these are just a few examples of how to incorporate home decorating fabrics into your home décor but remember to choose fabrics that speak to you, your personality and your heart. You’ll also want to remember that home decorating fabrics can be quite expensive so choose carefully as you may have to live with it for quite a while. Also good remember is that home decorating fabrics often require special care for washing so if you’d rather a fabric that is easy to care for, make sure you read the care instructions before buying your fabrics.
