Timeless Charm: Decorating with Staffordshire Figurines
Staffordshire figurines, particularly dogs, are an iconic design element in traditional décor. They had their peak during the Victorian era and began to fade into the background in the late 19th Century only to make a huge comeback in recent years.

During Covid, when people spent a considerable amount of time and money on redecorating their homes, we saw the Southern homes going back to the core of traditional design and décor, and that included Staffordshire pottery. It wasn’t that surprising since the Southern homes have always enjoyed traditional décor but what was interesting is that Staffordshire dogs took the entire online social community by storm, and we have seen them grow in popularity across all states. Everywhere you looked you saw Staffordshire dogs popping up and selling fast. It took the mainstream décor community a couple of years to catch up, and you are now seeing them everywhere.
History of Staffordshire Figurines
Staffordshire figurines originated in the 18th century in Staffordshire, England, where skilled potters created ceramic figures using local clay and glazes. The figurines were often made in molds, allowing for mass production and making them accessible to the masses. Over time, Staffordshire figurines became a staple of English country homes and were often displayed on mantelpieces, shelves, and sideboards.
Staffordshire designs included a large variety of domestic and wild animals and human figures of certain historic influence, but dogs continue to be the most popular and sought after of them all. King Charles Spaniels became the most popular, followed closely by Pekingese, greyhounds and pugs. Birds, particularly parrots, rank second in my opinion and based on customer demand. As a matter of fact, if you ever look closely at photos or footage taken of English royal residences you will invariably see at least a pair of Staffordshire dogs and/or birds on the mantel in the background! The late Queen certainly loved her Staffordshire pottery.
Decorating with Staffordshire Figurines
I think the original 18th and 19th century Staffordshire dogs are an acquired taste by today’s contemporary esthetic standards. Not everyone sees them as “adorable” or “beautiful” as most collectors do. The original designs would be considered a bit rough by today’s standards, and it is also almost impossible to find an original pair in pristine condition these days. Most will have visible flaws and are harder to incorporate in a contemporary home. That said, they remain highly collectable and sell for a lot of money.
This is where the modern reproductions come in. Not only they are readily available to everyone at a fraction of the cost, but the modern designs bring a perfect balance between the old and the new and are so easy to incorporate in most décor styles. They won’t age your décor as much as an original pair would, but they will certainly bring that warm, comforting Old Continent feel.
Staffordshire figurines, old or new, can be used to add a touch of whimsy and personality to any room. Here are some tips for decorating with these charming figurines:
- The mantel is the obvious placement for them and if you love symmetry, place one on each side of your mantle and flank them with potted green topiaries or natural stone obelisks. They will balance each other really well.
- They also display beautifully atop a stack of design books on the living room coffee table or on a console table in the foyer.
- Display a collection of Staffordshire figurines on a shelf or sideboard to create a visually appealing display.
- Mix and match: combine your Staffordshire figurines with other decorative items, such as vintage ceramics, antique furniture, and natural elements, to create a unique and eclectic display.
- Highlight a theme: use Staffordshire figurines to highlight a particular theme or interest, such as a love of animals or a fascination with mythology.
- Add a pop of color: use Staffordshire figurines to add a splash of color to a room, either by grouping them together or using them as a accent piece.
Staffordshire figurines are a timeless and charming decorative item that can add a touch of elegance and personality to any room. By grouping them together, mixing and matching with other decorative items, highlighting a theme, and adding a pop of color, you can create a unique and captivating display that showcases your personal style. Whether you're a seasoned collector or just starting your collection, Staffordshire figurines are a great way to add a touch of history and charm to your home decor.
