A fantastic pair of Chinese sancai glazed ceramic foo dogs. Incredibly rare to find!
Sancai is a type of decoration on Chinese pottery using glazes predominantly in the three colors of brown, green, and creamy off-white. The body of sancai ceramics was made of white clay, coated with colored glaze, and fired at really high temperatures. The polychrome effect was obtained by using coloring agents like copper (which turns green), iron (which turns brownish yellow), and less often cobalt (which turns blue). We are seeing all these colors on these pieces!
Because of their protective symbolism, foo dogs should be displayed in places where they are sure to be noticed. Place this pair on a console in the foyer, or make them a focal point of the living room atop the mantel. Foo dogs also work well as decorative bookends, and look stunning placed at either end of a buffet in a dining room.
