A beautiful and very large vintage Japanese Kutani porcelain Komainu figurine. Komainu are guardian statues that can be found in Japan guarding the entrance to temples and shrines, and are said to symbolize prosperity, success, and guardianship. They are the Japanese equivalent of the Chinese foo dogs.
This is the male Komainu which is usually depicted with mouth open and he is standing a whopping 17" tall. It is very rare to see these in such large size and in the blue and white color combination.
He is very impressive and a significant piece, both in size and weight, and will easily become the focal point of any room.
